Co-occurring disorders refer to co-occurring substance use (abuse or dependence) and mental disorders. Clients said to have co-occurring disorders (abbreviated as COD) have one or more mental illnesses and conditions relating to alcohol and other drugs.
By the 1990s, substance use treatment programs reported that 50 to 75 percent of clients had co-occurring mental disorders. In contrast, clinicians in mental health settings said that 20 and 50 percent of their clients had a co-occurring substance use disorder.
This course aims to use the TIP 42 Quick Guide to highlight the significant developments in the addiction treatment field relating to co-occurring disorders to help substance abuse and mental health professionals develop a plan for a more integrated treatment community that can better address the needs of clients with COD.
Substance use counselors who complete this educational program will be better equipped to provide quality care for clients with co-occurring conditions than those without this specialized knowledge.
