Assessment and Evaluation (19 hours)

Substance use disorders are commonly seen in patients in medical practices and are frequently comorbid with other medical and mental health disorders.

Considerable societal stigma exists toward patients with addictive disorders; healthcare providers frequently have negative attitudes toward these patients.

The identification, assessment, and referral for treatment of patients are strongly influenced by physician attitudes and life experiences with personal, family, or prior patients' substance use.

Effective tools and strategies help clinicians recognize the physiologic and behavioral red flags of addiction and elicit a substance use history in a nonjudgmental manner, so they can make the appropriate diagnosis and develop a patient-specific plan for treatment and referral.

The field is moving away from stigmatizing terms in client sessions, marketing content, and press, so we will do our best not to use terms that lead to stigma. However, in some cases, we can avoid using stigmatizing language.

In this addiction counselor training course, you will address the requirements for drug and alcohol screening and assessing persons for possible use disorders.

Objectives

This training will provide coursework so you can obtain knowledge of the following:

  • Interpreting written reports from other professionals, recognizing the need for additional information from collateral sources, updating and synthesizing data related to the client, identifying discrepancies in information given by the client and collateral sources, and assessing the appropriateness of involving concerned others in the assessment process with special consideration for domestic violence concerns;
  • Risk factors related to suicide, homicide, family violence, self-injury, and other harmful behaviors, assessing risk potential, and responding appropriately.
  • Screening for other non-substance-specific issues can impact assessment and treatment planning (e.g., suicidality, indicators of possible mental health disorders, medical conditions, gambling problems, other addictive disorders, etc.), including screening for issues outside the scope of practice of substance use.
  • Sharing of assessment results and communicating and exploring treatment options with the client;
  • Exploring treatment options with the client taking into consideration the client's need and how a client's financial circumstances influence treatment options and eligibility requirements for funding, and
  • Client ambivalence was encountered during the assessment process.

This self-study, self-paced addiction counselor training includes videos, SlideShare documents, PdFs, Case Studies, short quizzes to test your knowledge, etc.
