Special Populations, Race, and Substance Use Counseling (15 Hours)

This course is designed to provide addiction counselors with effective strategies to engage clients of diverse racial, ethnic, and special population groups (with very different life experiences, values, and traditions) in treatment.

We will discuss significant races and populations with special and diverse substance use treatment needs.

Diverse populations and special populations will be discussed in this course, including persons with HIV/AIDS, older adults and seniors, women, Native Americans/Alaska Natives (NAN), Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI), and other groups.

Issues unique to each of these diverse population groups will be identified, and appropriate strategies for treatment engagement will be explored.

 Objectives

Upon completion of this training, you will have gained the knowledge of the following:

  • a general introduction to each major racial and ethnic group, including special populations providing specific cultural knowledge related to substance use and treatment.
  • Provides guidelines for culturally responsive clinical services
  • Review cultural formulation outline
  • Gain an understanding of the different populations defined as special populations
  • Understand the necessary skills needed to effectively counsel individuals in those populations
  • Define the phrase “special population.”
  • Identify 3 populations that are defined to be special populations
  • Identify 2 subgroups found within special populations
  • Identify 2 prevention/ treatment needs of a particular population
  • Identify 1 or 2 feelings or behaviors that may result from their respective culture, including substance use
