Understanding Transitional Age Youth (TAY) Populations

Our youth need educated professionals who can speak with them about the stress, confusion, and anger their transition into adulthood causes, especially when compounded with racial inequality, sexual minority stress, gender nonconformity, intimate partner violence, or gang affiliations.

This premier TAY training program provides behavioral health professionals and organizations skills, evidence-based practices, and resources to empower youth as they transition into adulthood.

Objectives

1. Understanding TAY Populations training offers transitional-age youth (TAY) service providers the unique skills and practice needed to work with the TAY population effectively.

This training focuses on the specific developmental and transitional supports required to assist TAY individuals as they transition into adulthood by addressing behavioral health needs.

Understanding TAY Populations provides an overview of key concepts, strategies, tools, and perspectives that maximize effectiveness in working with, understanding, and communicating with transitional-age youth.

Additionally, this training will help substance use clinicians gain an understanding of the following:

2. LGBTQ, Gender, and Nonconformity

Many of society’s practices, policies, and institutions fail to meet the needs of the LGBTQ youth they intend to serve. Because of this, most LGBTQ youths feel marginalized, unsafe, and less hopeful.

This training provides all persons who work with TAY populations with a better understanding of the LGBTQ community. After this training, you'll feel more comfortable and confident when communicating with and supporting LGBTQ transitional-aged youth.

3. Intimate Partner Violence

The Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) training highlights the complicated dynamics of domestic violence.

You'll gain an understanding of intimate partner violence and learn the following:

  • The four types of  IPV suffered by victims.
  • Understand the concept that states DV is a learned behavior
  • Recognize some of the myths surrounding domestic violence

By the end of this section of the training, you'll have an:

  • Increased competency and comfort when working with victims and survivors
  • Understanding the effects of substance use (disorder) as a coping mechanism, a service barrier, and a means of coercion and control
  • Increased confidence when implementing practical skills, trauma-informed care, advocacy, referral, and safety planning.

4. Anger and Substance Use Disorder

This course incorporates topics from the book: Anger Management for Substance Use Disorder and Mental Health Clients A Cognitive–Behavioral Therapy Manual.

Topics include:

  • Overview of Group Anger Management Treatment
  • Events and Cues: A Conceptual Framework for Understanding Anger
  • Anger Control Plans: Helping Group Members Develop a Plan for Controlling Anger
  • The Aggression Cycle: Changing the Anger Cycle
  • Cognitive Restructuring: The A-B-C-D Model and Thought Stopping
  • Assertiveness Training and the Conflict Resolution Model
  • Alternatives for Expressing Anger
  • Anger and the Family

5. Gangs and Gang Affiliation

People involved with gangs experience a disproportionate amount of violence and trauma, leading to the development of mental health and substance use disorders.

Training starts by defining the basics of gangs and gang affiliations. We move on to other subjects, including recruitment methods, exploitation, violence, and more. Before we end the discussion about this unique criminal organization, we advise professionals to deal with at-risk people who may become involved in a gang.
